Introduction to Environmental Engineering Laboratory Center

The USST Environmental Engineering Laboratory Center in the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE) was established in 1998. It has made great progress in hardware facilities, faculty staff, experimental teaching and scientific research after 20 years construction and development. The laboratory area is about 3500 m2 (including 2580 m2 of Undergraduate Professional Laboratory), and there are 4 full-time staff, 1086 sets of various experimental equipments with a value of 23.86 million Yuan.

The Environmental Engineering Laboratory Center coupled together the Undergraduate Experimental Teaching, Discipline Construction and Scientific Research to form a Trinity Laboratory Construction Model. In 2006, it was appraised by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission as Highland Key Laboratory for Undergraduate Education. It includes Water Pollution Control Laboratory, Air Pollution Control Laboratory, Solid Waste Treatment and Disposal Laboratory, Environmental Monitoring Laboratory, Environmental Microbiology Laboratory, Environmental Engineering Principles Laboratory and Platform for Scientific Creation of College Students, serving for Undergraduate education. The center was equipped with some World Advanced Testing Equipments such as XRD, ICP-MS, LC-MS-MS, GC-MS, and IC supported by Shanghai Education Highland, 085 project, Summit-Plateau Discipline Construction Plan, and Shanghai High Level University projects. These Equipments have greatly improved the equipment level, and ensured the experimental teaching effect.

The center undertake the teaching tasks of USST Environment Engineering Specialized Basic Experiment Courses for Undergraduate Experimental Teaching, which covers the area of Pollution Control (water, air and Solid Waste), Environmental Engineering Principles, Environmental Microbiology, Environmental Monitoring, and Environmental wind tunnel simulation. Over 10 specialized experimental courses are founded. Through continuous experimental teaching reform, the center, an excellent experimental teaching curriculum system has been formed, over 60% of experiments are comprehensive, designable and innovative. The laboratories open on demand, and have a reception of 1600 person-time for innovative and practice activity every year.
