The 14th National Structural Design Competition for Undergraduates (Shanghai Station) organized by the School of Environment and Architecture was held in the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology from 16th to 18th July 2021. Experts from the National Teaching Steering Committee of Civil Engineering and eight universities in Shanghai attended the prize-awarding ceremony on 18th July, together with Prof. Jing Jin, Secretary of Communist Party of the school, Prof. Bin Peng, Vice Dean of the school, and Prof. Pingping Rao, Director of Civil Engineering.

This competition (Shanghai station) is a key part of the National Structural Design Competition for undergraduates. It is one of the nine national discipline competitions for the first time confirmed by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance, and hence has a nationwide reputation. It is also identified as a class A competition by University of Shanghai for Science and Technology. The competition lasted for three days. In addition to sixteen teams and instructors from eight universities, there were also judges and experts as well as teachers and students who came to learn and communicate. A total of nearly 200 people participated in the competition, which was the largest number in Shanghai in recent years. The competition was also sponsored by the leading industries such as Beijing YJK Building Software Co., Ltd and Beijing MIDAS Information Technology Co., Ltd.

The competition laid emphasis on the comprehensive qualifications for outstanding engineers by including undetermined parameters in the competition questions which gave design more flexibility, and by involving on-site design. The expert group was composed of Prof. Lie Luo from Tongji University, Prof. Xiaobing Song from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Prof. Xiaoqing Du from Shanghai University, Prof. Shengbin Gao from Shanghai Normal University, Prof. Wensheng Ding from Shanghai University of Applied Technology, Prof. Dashan Dong from Shanghai Maritime University, and Prof. Lei Wang from Shanghai University of Engineering Technology. The structural model was accessed by the expert group based on structural selection, structural design and calculation, model construction, and loading test. After three days of intense competition, the teams from Tongji University, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Shanghai Normal University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University won the first, second and third prizes respectively. Prof. Weiping Zhang, Secretary General of the National Teaching Steering Committee of Civil Engineering, presented the prizes.

This competition is an important measure by the School of Environment and Architecture to explore the practical teaching reform of New Engineering in accordance with the deployment of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, and hence is of great significance to the school to promote the construction of National First-Class Undergraduate Disciple and the certification of Engineering Education.
